Most businesses and charities do not need an audit. Exemptions have been widening and most people are glad to escape. For those that are covered, the annual audit is generally thought to be an expensive nuisance, with no benefits except compliance with legislation. And for them, things have got worse in recent years. Audits have become more onerous Various financial scandals in large international companies (Enron, Parmalat, etc.) forced a re-think about how audits should be carried out. New International Auditing Standards (IASs) now applied to the UK, and audit fees immediately rose. Large audit firms invested in new audit systems — which tend to be applied to all clients, of whatever size. Many smaller firms decided to no longer offer audit services. The made-to-measure approach However, many small and medium sized enterprises can still benefit from the more focused approach at Chamberlains.
